GUEST ARTIST- MARK KOSOWER
“CENTURIES COMBINED”

Mark KosowerOne of the outstanding cellists of his generation, Mark Kosower is hailed by musicians and critics alike for his instrumental mastery and deep musical integrity.

In the summer of 2008, Mark Kosower sees two albums released by Naxos International: Ginastera's complete works for cello and piano, and an album of Hungarian music with works by Popper, Dohnanyi, Bartok and others.This summer he also performs the Monn Concerto with the St. George Strings in Belgrade, appears at the Hungarian Cello Festival, and returns to North America for the Mammoth Lakes Music Festival and a recital in Coral Gables.Next up, Kosower opens the Springfield Symphony's season and joins the Riverside Symphonia for Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations.

2007/08 included a five-concert tour with the Syracuse Symphony, a residency and concerts with the St. George Strings in Belgrade, and the US premiere of Yuri Falik's Cello Concerto de Passione at the Peninsula Music Festival. Last season Mr. Kosower performed recitals at Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and appeared with the Seattle, Spokane and Silicon Valley symphony orchestras.

Other recent highlights include appearances with the symphony orchestras of Florida, Seattle, Spokane, Silicon Valley and Toledo; and recitals at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, at New York City's Merkin Hall, at the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and at the NationalGallery in Washington, D.C.He recorded the Walton Cello Concerto with James DePriest and the Oregon Symphony for Delos International.

An eloquent orchestral soloist, Mr. Kosower has appeared with the Buffalo, Dayton, Florida, and Long Island philharmonics, and the Symphony orchestras of Detroit, Florida, Grand Rapids, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Phoenix, Santa Barbara, Toledo, and with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, among others. International appearances include the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the China National Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, the Kansai Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic, and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Kosower has collaborated with many prominent conductors such as James DePriest, Christoph Eschenbach, Joanne Falletta, Erich Kunzel, Nicholas McGegan, Anton Nanut, Stefan Sanderling, Gunther Schuller, Gerard Schwarz, Joseph Silverstein and Hugh Wolff.

As a recitalist Mr. Kosower has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, at the Aspen Music Festival, and on Ravinia's "Rising Stars" series. He has given solo performances in some of the world's most prestigious venues, including the Théâtre de Châlet in Paris, Frankfurt's Alte Oper, Berlin's Komische Oper, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Theatro Municipale in Rio de Janeiro, and in New York's Avery Fisher Hall.

A former member of Chamber Music Two, a two-year residency at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Mr. Kosower makes frequent appearances at chamber music societies and festivals throughout the United States and abroad, in performances with such esteemed musicians as Robert Mann, Leon Fleisher and Janos Starker.

The recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Mr. Kosower was recently awarded a SONY Grant through the Salon de Virtuosi in New York. Other notable honors include Grand Prize of the 7th Irving Klein International String Competition, first-prize at the Aspen Music Festival and the Juilliard Cello Concerto competitions, and top prizes in the Rostropovich and Pablo Casals International Cello competitions. Mr. Kosower was associated with ASTRAL Artistic Services from 2002-07.

Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 2005-07, Mr. Kosower has given master classes around the world. In addition to his performing and teaching activities, Mr. Kosower is currently Solo Cellist of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany under Music Director Jonathan Nott. Mr. Kosower studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University and Joel Krosnick at the Juilliard School.

GUEST ARTIST- MALWINA SOSNOWSKI
“SECULAR AND SACRED”

Malwina Sosnowski

The young, prize winning violinist, Malwina Sosnowski, comes from Riehen near Basel in Switzerland. In 2002 und 2004 Malwina won the “Swiss Competition for Young Musicians“ twice with distinction and special recognitions. In 2005 she took 1st Prize at the international “Andrea Postacchini” Violin Competition in Fermo, Italy and won a special additional prize for the Best Bach Interpretation. Shortly after she won the “Novartis Graduate Prize" and the Riehen Culture Award. In the “International Violin Competition in Torun 2007“ she gained 3rd Prize amongst 50 international competitors, thereby gaining concerts in Spain, Poland and in the Slowakian Republic.

Malwina began learning the violin from her mother at the age of 6. Both her parents of Polish origin are members of the Symphony Orchestra Basel. At 7 she was a pupil of Professor Wolfgang Marschner’s class for young talents in Freiburg and then she studied until 2004 with French violinist Raphael Oleg in Basel.
Since September 2006 she is studying for a Batchelors’ Degree with Ida Kavafian and Joseph Silverstein at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia USA, returning to Europe whenever concert engagements require.

Her first concert with orchestra was as a seven year-old at the “Arosa Music Festival”. At 9 she made her first appearance on Polish Television.  Then followed concerts, recitals, radio and television recordings as a soloist in Switzerland, Poland, Finland, France, the Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Argentinia, in Kirgizia, China and in the USA. In 2004 Malwina was one of the soloists on the Chinese Tournee of  the Symphony Orchestra Basel, playing in the Grand Theatre in Shanghai besides other venues

In January 2007 she gave her debut in Zurich’s famous Tonhalle Concert Hall with Mozart’s D major Violin Concerto together with the Zurich Symphony Orchestra. In May she played with the Newark Symphony Orchestra in the USA and in October 2007 she toured in Argentina, also giving Master classes. In the USA Malwina has also begun to acquire her first experiences as a teacher.

In Switzerland she has performed with conductors Howard Griffiths and Marco Letonja, performing with the Orchestre Jeunesse Musicales de Suisse, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Suisse and the Basel Symphony Orchestra.

Thanks to the support of Baumann et Cie., Banquiers Basel, Malwina plays the Guarneri del Gésu violin titled "Ex Baron Paganini" dating from 1740.

This summer, Malwina gave a recital programme at the Radio France Festival in Montpellier Langedoc-Rousillon, featuring as part of this year’s ‘Stradivari Exhibition’ taking place in the city at the same time.

David HandelAmerican conductor David Handel, presently Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia and the UNCuyo Symphony Orchestra of Mendoza, Argentina, has developed an extraordinary reputation as one of the most respected and innovative conductors in Latin America.

His imaginative programming and distinctive community approach have brought record numbers of Bolivians to National Symphony concerts. Since the beginning of his tenure in Bolivia, audience attendance has grown twelve-fold, most of the new audience composed of young concert-goers.
