Edward Grieg: Suite in Old Style “From Holberg’s Time” 
Jules Massenet : Meditation from "Thais"
Piotr Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme 
Maggio/Lansky: "Color, Line, and Light"
Sergei Prokofiev: Classical Symphony 

Featuring Mark Kosower, cello

Grieg looks at the Baroque period through the eyes of Romantic composer, while another Great Romantic – Tchaikovsky uses an old theme as an inspiration for a set of variations. The Forth century story about Thais brings out the best melodies out of Massenet and Haydn’s classical example serves s the reference point for humorous symphony by modern days Prokofiev.

While enjoying the glorious timbres of Christmas and its traditional melodies, we will also compare how the secular and sacred musical traditions blend during this special season creating one of a kind joyous celebration!
2008 Caprio Competition winner will display her dazzling technique and inspiring musicianship playing virtuosic music by Henryk Wieniawski.

“FROM FOLK TO CLASSIC"

A. Copland: Old American Songs    
A. Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”      

Copland quotes many of the traditional American songs and puts them into symphonic setting. Dvorak’s travels and connections with American folk traditions resulted in a symphony that bridges folk and classic as well as the West with the East.

“All star High School Chorus” makes a special appearance with the Symphonia.

The Choral Society's string of memorable collaborations with Riverside Symphonia continues this season with a single performance of Mozart's stirring Requiem for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra. The addition of moving pieces for chorus and string orchestra from two 20th-21st century composers - Fern Hill (based on Dylan Thomas poetry) by John Corigliano, and Chris DeBlasio's The Best Beloved - make this concert sure to be one of the high points of the season.
